Being a security officer is a tough yet rewarding career. It's important to be professional and serious while working, especially in tough situations. However, if you come across as unapproachable or uninterested in helping, those around you may find you unfriendly and not very helpful. Working as a security officer requires you to focus on your customer service skills in order to make your interactions pleasant.
The following are some ways you can provide excellent customer service:
Make a Good First Impression
Security officers are often the first point of contact when a customer has an issue. That is why it is important to greet every customer in a friendly way, whether it is over the phone or in person. When addressing the customer, address them by saying Mr. and Mrs. and their last name. Make sure your uniform is clean, your badge is visible, and you keep up with your personal grooming.
Engage in Customer Contact
Being a security officer, it's important to take the time to talk to your customers and listen to their questions. This could help you identify smaller issues before they become bigger problems. Smile, nod, wave, and respond to others when they speak to you. If you are a security officer working at a building and have regular customers, take the time to learn names.
Maintain Control Over Your Voice and Body Language
When customers are irate and getting loud, it's important that you are calm and friendly. This will help customers feel more secure and relaxed as getting frustrated will only escalate the problem. Maintain eye contact and good posture as this will show you are focused and attentive to their needs. Don't stand in front of them with folded arms across your chest. This gives a vibe that you are closed off.
Offer Assistance to Customers
First and foremost, your job is to protect the building and the safety of customers and employees. However, depending on where you are stationed, you may be able to offer additional assistance to show customers you care. This may include holding the door open, helping to carry large objects, escorting customers to their vehicles in the dark, and offering other assistance where you see fit.
Provide Explanation
When customers are told why they are supposed to do something, they will be more likely to do it, especially when they can see you are trying to follow the proper procedure. Thank the customer for complying.
